Main uses
1. Gauge adjustment
Fill the gap between the rail and the sleeper with gauge blocks of different thicknesses to precisely adjust the gauge to the standard value.
Compensate for the changes in gauge caused by manufacturing tolerances, installation errors or long-term wear of rails or sleepers.
2. Fix the position of the steel rails
When used in conjunction with fasteners, it prevents the lateral movement of the rail and maintains the stability of the gauge.
Disperse the lateral force transmitted by the rails and reduce the wear of the sleepers.
3. Insulation protection (for non-metallic gauge blocks)
Some gauge blocks are made of insulating materials such as nylon and composite materials, which can prevent short circuits in the track circuit and are suitable for electrified railways or automatic block sections.
4. Shock absorption and buffering

Usage scenarios
Turnout area
The turnout structure is complex and the gauge changes frequently (such as the pointed rail, part). Gauge blocks are used to ensure the gauge at all parts is accurate and to prevent flange impact.
2. New construction or maintenance of lines
When laying new rails, the gauge is quickly adjusted through the gauge blocks. Replace worn parts or correct gauge deviations during maintenance.
3. Small-radius curved sections
The rail in the curve section is prone to outward movement under the action of centrifugal force. It is necessary to strengthen the fixation of the gauge. The cooperation between the gauge block and the fastener can enhance the lateral restraint.
4. Electrified railway
Use insulated gauge blocks to avoid the failure of the signal track circuit caused by metal components.
5. High-speed railways or heavy-haul railways
High requirements are placed on the smoothness of the track. The gauge blocks need to have high strength and fatigue resistance to cope with high-frequency and large-load impacts.

Metal gauge blocks: Mostly cast iron or steel, used for ordinary lines, economical and durable.
