Core functions and roles
Mechanical connection function
As the "skeleton" of the track joint, the splint needs to withstand complex dynamic loads. Under the condition of 60kg/m rail, when the rail temperature changes by 30ºC, the clamping plate needs to resist a temperature stress of approximately 120kN. At the same time, it also has to bear the lateral and vertical forces generated when the train passes by, among which the dynamic load amplification coefficient can reach 1.8-2.2 times.
2. Geometric retention effect
The splint ensures the geometric position of the joint through precise mechanical processing. On ordinary circuits, it can control the misalignment of the joint within 1mm. On high-speed railways, this standard is even stricter, requiring no more than 0.3mm. Through the design of different aperture sizes, the clamping plate can adapt to the rail gap adjustment requirements ranging from 8 to 18mm.
3. Vibration control characteristics
Modern plywood design focuses on vibration damping performance. The use of elastic clamps can reduce the peak impact force at the joint by 25%, and the clamps with special cross-sectional designs can also reduce the wheel-rail noise by 3 to 5 decibels.

Application scenarios
1. Ordinary railway joints
Standard 6-hole plywood is adopted, and the material is usually U71Mn hot-rolled steel. The bolt preload is controlled within the range of 40 to 60kN. Under normal operating conditions, it can pass a total weight of approximately 200 million tons, which is equivalent to a service life of 5 to 8 years.
2. Frozen joints for high-speed railways
It adopts a four-hole reinforced design, and the material is mostly BNbRE rare earth steel. The anti-loosening design featuring Spiro threads in combination with hydraulic anti-loosening nuts has been applied in practice on the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, indicating that the maintenance cycle can reach up to five years.
3. Heavy-duty transportation routes
The double-web splints stipulated in the North American standard ARE-4 can withstand an axle load of 40 tons and still maintain good performance under 10 million cycle loads. The special plywood for the Daqin Railway has undergone bainite strengthening treatment, significantly enhancing its wear resistance.
 
Special environment application
A variety of specialized splints have been developed for different environmental conditions: cold-resistant splints with a low-temperature impact toughness of 34J at -60ºC are used in high-cold regions. Stainless steel composite plywood that has passed the 2000-hour salt spray test is adopted in coastal areas. The electrification section is equipped with fiberglass reinforced plastic substrate clamps with insulation resistance exceeding 10^12Ω. The tunnel section uses fireproof coated plywood that can withstand a temperature of 950ºC for 90 minutes.

Key points of operation and maintenance technology
1. Installation quality control
The torque gradient construction method is adopted, and the final torque is gradually tightened in three steps, with the control deviation within ±5%. Before installation, the contact surface should be sandblasted to meet the Sa2.5 standard to ensure that the friction coefficient is between 0.4 and 0.5.
2. Condition monitoring technology
The crack detection rate of ultrasonic flaw detection technology exceeds 99%, and it can identify defects with a depth of more than 1mm. Magnetic memory detection can accurately locate the stress concentration area within a range of ±5mm.
3. Life assessment methods
A prediction model is established based on the Miner cumulative damage criterion. It is recommended to replace it when the damage degree reaches 0.8. On heavy-duty lines, a comprehensive assessment is usually required when the total weight reaches 300Mt.
